Her husband is stupid, Lucy concludes while in the bath.
She read that book of Mary's, she thinks as she gets out and dries and dresses again, and she could tell he was enjoying it and he got all upset just because she happens to think Lilly Kane is pretty and fun to flirt with and then he had to go and be stupid, and by go she means not be with her, dammit.
And she just finished her last chocolate bar, too.
Dammit dammit dammit.
None of it's fair, and he's not here and she should just go to her room. She should. That would show him. Or she could go snog Lilly. She'd at least get snogged without stupid talking then.
She really wants him to come home, though.
Dammit.

"It all seems like a dream sometimes, still. You being here. I still think I'll wake up and find myself back in the stream. Or on the Dawn Treader. Feels like I don't deserve having you here. I thought--maybe--"
But he doesn't finish, quite. Instead, his hand reaches out, finds its way across her stomach, and he curls into her side, resting his face in the crook between her head and shoulder.
"Tease me about anything you like, except leaving?"

Her arms go tightly around him and she never, ever wants to let go.
"You--oh, my love, don't--you deserve better than this. You do," she says, firmly, and into his hair. "Better than this, and me, because you deserve anything. And everything. But I promise it's real. I promise you won't wake up from this. I promise, and I'm a queen, so you have to listen to what I say," and she doesn't care if it's not quite true, he shouldn't ever doubt this.
And her lips are soft again his hair again as she promises, "Not that. I won't tease about that. Not ever. Lion forsake me if I do."

He breathes a little easier.
Funnier, really, that though he's felt this way, he never has really accepted what it might mean. It's been pushed away and down and ignored for so long that it's almost a surprise to discover that the thoughts are still there, after all.
"All right," he says, finally, quietly, and he tugs her close to his own body.
"There isn't anything better than you, Lu. Nothing, not in any worlds I've ever seen. So I'll take your word in all but that," and he smiles, and when he tilts his face back up again he kisses her softly.

And then he kisses her, and she relaxes more in his arms and kisses back just as softly.

"Have your name now, remember? Means I'm always yours, no matter what."

And it makes her smile back and she whispers, "Forever and always. Shan't let you go. And in the morning I'm taking advantage of that and seeing how long I can make you squirm in this bed."
Lucy kisses him again, softly, after saying that and moves her head to press her face into the crook of his neck again.

It's been a long day.

She pulls away, firmly, for a moment--enough to get a quilt from the foot of the bed and tiredly spreads it out before pulling it over them, leaning into his side again.
Because she loves him, and it will be colder, even here, as the night goes on.
"Just wait til the morning and you'll see."

It isn't long before he drifts off to sleep, with Lucy breathing evenly beside him.
And it turns out, in the morning, that it was a promise, after all.
