Her husband is stupid, Lucy concludes while in the bath.

She read that book of Mary's, she thinks as she gets out and dries and dresses again, and she could tell he was enjoying it and he got all upset just because she happens to think Lilly Kane is pretty and fun to flirt with and then he had to go and be stupid, and by go she means not be with her, dammit.

And she just finished her last chocolate bar, too.

Dammit dammit dammit.

None of it's fair, and he's not here and she should just go to her room. She should. That would show him. Or she could go snog Lilly. She'd at least get snogged without stupid talking then.

She really wants him to come home, though.

Dammit.

It's doubtful that he would really argue with any comeuppance she decides to lay on him after this.

But still, her saying his name like that, with her voice rough around the edges and heated and almost breaking--he wants to push her over the edge, to let her break and fall and come together again.

So he pushes.

"There," he whispers, looking up at her, and he moves gently until he's lying by her side again, and they can both collapse into the pillows and the bedclothes, his arm loose over her stomach and his eyes tracing her face with tired delight.

"I love you," he says, softly. She's just--

She's glowing and she's beautiful.

He groans a little, and stretches contentedly against her side.

"You broke me first," he says, languidly, because he can be lazy now, and he likes that. And it seems his thoughts are moving along the same paths as heres, because he follows that with:

"I'm never getting up again. What do you think?"

Caspian ducks his head, grinning, and his blush heats the pillow.

He has never looked quite so boyish.

"...No. Awfully nice, though."

He glances over at her, inexplicably a little shy now, despite the intimacies they've shared. "'m sorry," quickly. "About. Before." One hand comes up to push his hair back from his forehead.

"Was being an ass."

He thinks back on it, lying on his stomach with his arms under the pillow that's under his chin.

And the odd thing is...he hasn't any idea why he got so upset, either. Honestly, all she was trying to do was, well...

He blushes. But there weren't any patrons around and he'd still pushed her away. It makes no sense at all, now that he thinks on it.

"I...don't know," he admits, frowning a little. "I did know, back there. But now it doesn't seem like any of what I thought mattered really did matter after all."

Oh, and that makes him hang his head, suddenly and horrbly uncomfortable, remembering heated words tossed back and forth.

"I know," he mumbles. "Just...that's what Lilly does. I just.

"It stung, a bit. Even not believing it."

He's not really that much of an idiot.

"Just me being an ass," he says, without much conviction, because he still isn't sure of how--or what--to tell her.

"It all seems like a dream sometimes, still. You being here. I still think I'll wake up and find myself back in the stream. Or on the Dawn Treader. Feels like I don't deserve having you here. I thought--maybe--"

But he doesn't finish, quite. Instead, his hand reaches out, finds its way across her stomach, and he curls into her side, resting his face in the crook between her head and shoulder.

"Tease me about anything you like, except leaving?"

And it's funny, but...

He breathes a little easier.

Funnier, really, that though he's felt this way, he never has really accepted what it might mean. It's been pushed away and down and ignored for so long that it's almost a surprise to discover that the thoughts are still there, after all.

"All right," he says, finally, quietly, and he tugs her close to his own body.

"There isn't anything better than you, Lu. Nothing, not in any worlds I've ever seen. So I'll take your word in all but that," and he smiles, and when he tilts his face back up again he kisses her softly.

"Never will," he murmurs, against her lips, and smiles.

"Have your name now, remember? Means I'm always yours, no matter what."

"That's a challenge?" he asks, grinning, but it's a tired grin all the same. He tucks her into his side and closes his eyes, sighing.

It's been a long day.

"Till the morning," he yawns, and helps her spread the quilt over them.

It isn't long before he drifts off to sleep, with Lucy breathing evenly beside him.

And it turns out, in the morning, that it was a promise, after all.
